Poortvliet makes another Strasbourg raid for versatile youngster
Attacking midfielder Romain Gasmi has joined Southampton from French side Strasbourg on a season-long loan.
It is the second time this summer that Saints boss Jan Poortvliet has bolstered his squad with a Strasbourg player after he signed Morgan Schneiderlin from the Ligue 2 outfit back in June.
Gasmi will give the Championship side plenty of options but he will remain initially in France while recuperating from a broken foot.
When he does cross the Channel, the Saints have got an option to purchase the 21-year-old should he prove a success.
Quality player
Poortvliet told the club's official website: "We have heard a lot about him from France. He's a quality player and he can play in several positions - on the wing, or in the hole.
"He's a good dribbler and can score goals. I also know his former coach Jean Papin. When I met Romain last week he was very positive and all he wants to do now is train with us.
"He's very happy about the move and we are looking forward to working with him.
"He also knows Morgan Schneiderlin from before and that will help them both to settle because it's often good to have a familiar face about the place."
