Burton 1-2 Bristol City: Tammy Abraham double downs Albion

Tammy Abraham continued his early-season goalscoring form to condemn Sky Bet Championship new boys Burton to a harsh 2-1 defeat on their home debut in the second tier.

The on-loan Chelsea youngster bundled home the opening goal in the 44th minute after the Burton defence failed to deal with a long throw from Hordur Magnusson.

Albion appeared to have grabbed a deserved point with just two minutes of normal time remaining, substitute Tom Naylor smashing home Stuart Beavon's cross.

But in the fifth minute of added time Jonathan Kodjia robbed Jackson Irvine of possession on the right before crossing low for Abraham to force the ball over the line in front of the travelling City fans.

Burton dominated possession in the first half but were unable to seriously test Richard O'Donnell in the Robins goal.

The only time he was beaten in the first period, Josh Brownhill was on hand to clear from almost on the line from Lloyd Dyer's teasing cross.

An early Lee Tomlin effort was easily dealt with by Burton goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin and the home side certainly enjoyed the better of the first-half action until Abraham's sent them into the break a goal down.

Burton continued to press forward in the second half with some promising approach play and Kyle McFadzean lashed a shot into the side-netting, but the Bristol City defence continued to hold firm.

Lucas Akins and Tom Flanagan both went close for the Brewers as they cranked up the pressure in search of an equaliser, Akins just unable to convert Irvine's teasing cross and Flanagan volleying straight at O'Donnell.

With a quarter of an hour remaining Akins again went close, his low shot deflected wide, while O'Donnell denied Matty Palmer with an excellent save low to his left with 13 minutes remaining.

City broke free of their defensive shackles with five minutes to go and won a corner, from which Abraham rose unmarked six yards out only to head over the crossbar.

And when Naylor equalised moments later it looked like the Chelsea youngster had been made to pay for his profligacy, but he had the last word with almost the last kick of the game.
