Di Canio slams substitution

CONTROVERSIAL Italian Paolo Di Canio has again thrown his West Ham United career in doubt after he told the club to give him a free transfer in the summer.

The 33-year-old has been at loggerheads with Hammers boss Glenn Roeder, ever since the former Upton Park coach took charge in the summer.

Di Canio almost moved to Manchester United in January, but the move collapsed after The Red Devils failed to sell Dwight Yorke.

The former Sheffield Wednesday and Celtic star has now caused a new stir after publicly showing his disapproval at being substituted in last Saturday's game at Fulham.

Upon being removed from the pitch, Di Canio snatched his tracksuit top and stormed towards the tunnel, but not before making his feelings known to Roeder.

"I am not prepared to be treated like a kid who has just started his career," blasted Di Canio.

"The decision to take me off in the second half left everybody amazed. First of all because I wasn't at all tired and also because the Fulham fans applauded me and the West Ham fans started to sing my name.

"I have a funny feeling that maybe people at the club are trying to imply that I am getting tired easily and that I'm not up to it. That is not true.

"If West Ham do not want me around in the future, then they have only got one thing to do - give me a free transfer at the end of the season.

"I never let myself be taken for a ride, not even by such respected managers as Giovanni Trapattoni and Fabio Capello.

"Glenn Roeder is still at the beginning of his managerial career and young managers have to learn the same way young players have to learn. But he should appreciate he will not go far if he cannot find the courage to substitute the players who need to be."
