Dave Whelan unveils a statue outside the DW Stadium to mark his time as chairman of Wigan.

Wigan have paid tribute to Dave Whelan by unveiling a statue of the club's owner outside the DW Stadium.

Unveiled on the day Whelan turned 80, the statue depicts the Latics legend holding the FA Cup after Wigan famously defeated Manchester City in the 2013 final.

A former player with Blackburn and Crewe, Whelan purchased Wigan in 1995 and they quickly began to move up the divisions, reaching the Premier League in 2005 before they were relegated at the end of the cup-winning season.

Whelan stood down as chairman in March 2015 and his grandson David Sharpe took over.

Whelan himself unveiled the statue and the FA Cup winning manager Roberto Martinez and captain Emmerson Boyce were present at the ceremony.
