Manuel Pellegrini says he couldn't have asked for a better start to the season

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has backed Raheem Sterling to keep scoring after he opened his account in the 2-0 win over Watford on Saturday.

The 20-year-old scored shortly after the break to put the hosts in front, before Fernandinho doubled the lead nine minutes later.

Sterling has had to wait for his first Premier League goal since his £49m move from Liverpool, and now he has overcome that hurdle, Pellegrini has backed him to score more.

"Raheem has played very well in all the games," he said.

Raheem Sterling scored his first Premier League goal for Man City as they beat Watford.

"Of course he wants to score - it was good for him to do it. He had another chance in the first half, but I think he worked very hard in the whole game.

"I'm sure he will score more goals."

City's win means they keep up their 100-per-cent record, scoring 10 goals without reply in their four games so far this season.

City captain Vincent Kompany is also delighted with their start to the campaign

Reigning champions Chelsea lost at home to Crystal Palace, meaning City now have an eight-point gap over their rivals, but Pellegrini is taking nothing for granted.

"It is difficult to ask for better - we have 12 points, nobody has scored a goal [against us] and we are scoring a lot of goals," he added.

"But it's also important to go game by game, to understand that we are just starting the season.

"It's a long season and the Premier League is very difficult in every game.

"Remember last season we were eight points behind Chelsea, then by January we were exactly the same at the top of the table."
