Siem de Jong has returned to Ajax from Newcastle, two years after he joined the Premier League club on a six-year deal.
The forward arrived on Tyneside for a reported £7m fee in 2014 on the back of four Eredivisie titles with the Dutch giants, having also captained the side from 2012.
But after just one Premier League goal and four appearances during his injury-plagued three years at St James' Park, De Jong has returned to Amsterdam on a three-year contract.
He missed lengthy periods through injuries which included a collapsed lung, a ruptured thigh muscle and an eye problem suffered when he was caught accidentally by a team-mate in training.
De Jong joins striker Emmanuel Riviere in leaving the club as Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez attempts to remove players from his squad who are surplus to requirements with Tim Krul, Achraf Lazaar, Grant Hanley and Jack Colback among those who have been told they can leave.
De Jong spent last season on loan at Ajax's rivals PSV Eindhoven where he managed six goals in 22 appearances.
Now 28, De Jong's return to Ajax will see Newcastle recoup £4m of their investment in the striker, according to Dutch reports.
