Rob Green spilled the ball into the path of Dwight Gayle (C) to tap home

A disastrous mistake from Rob Green allowed Dwight Gayle the easiest of chances to put Newcastle ahead against Leeds on Sunday afternoon.

A miscued cross by Jack Colback seemed to offer the Leeds goalkeeper a routine chance to claim, but Green inexplicably palmed the ball into the path of Gayle.

The Championship's top goalscorer made no mistake, tapping home his 12th goal of the season from close range.

Rafa Benitez's Newcastle moved five points clear at the top of the table with a 2-0 victory at Elland Road, extending the gap between themselves and second-place Brighton.

They were held by Aston Villa, live on Sky Sports on Friday, at the Amex Stadium.

Newcastle have won their last eight league matches, putting them in pole position to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
