Jurgen Klopp explains onfield talk with Xherdan Shaqiri

Jurgen Klopp says a late free-kick was the subject of his animated exchange with Xherdan Shaqiri following the final whistle of Liverpool's Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea.

The Liverpool boss came onto the field after the late defeat on Wednesday night at Anfield, in which an Eden Hazard strike sealed victory.

Klopp shook hands with some of his own players and opponents before engaging in discussion with Shaqiri.

The former Stoke player made only his second start in a Liverpool shirt, and was influential in the build-up to the Reds' goal.

Klopp later explained that he had spoken to Shaqiri about a late free-kick in the match, of which he felt the Switzerland international should have taken rather than handing over duties to captain Jordan Henderson.

"I spoke about a free-kick, the last one," Klopp told reporters in his post-match press conference.

"We wanted to have Mo [Mohamed Salah] a bit wider, so we had passed the ball to Mo, the whole bunch of players was in one direction - where we shot the ball, actually.

"But if we can send Mo into a one-on-one situation in the last situation of the game, it would have been not too bad. What I said was about the free-kick, nothing else."

Liverpool had taken the lead in the match courtesy of an acrobatic effort from Daniel Sturridge, only for Chelsea to level the score-line through defender Emerson.

The Video Assisted Referee (VAR) was called into action, though the goal was still given to the bemusement of Klopp.
