Emre Can is losing his race to be fit for Liverpool's Champions League quarter-final first leg at home to Manchester City on Wednesday night.
The Germany international suffered a recurrence of a back injury on international duty last month and was not part of Liverpool's matchday squad for Saturday's 2-1 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Boss Jurgen Klopp believes the midfielder, who is out of contract at the end of the season, is unlikely to feature for the visit of Pep Guardiola's side to Anfield.
"Emre will at least be very, very close for tomorrow," he told reporters.
"He has a session today with the rehab coach and we will see but it does not look too good.
"Joe Gomez is of course not involved, like Ragnar Klavan not involved, and Ben Woodburn."
Klopp confirmed during his news conference that Joel Matip will be out for the season after sustaining a thigh injury during Saturday's win at Selhurst Park.
But there is a glimmer of hope for Adam Lallana, whose World Cup chances looked to have been jeopardised after he was substituted five minutes after coming on against Palace at the weekend.
"Adam (Lallana) we have to see. It's a hamstring injury. It could have been worse, but it's bad enough of course," Klopp added.
"That, of course, means he is not available for this game and for the next few weeks but there's still a chance he could be back again this season."
