Chelsea's Callum Hudson-Odoi says initial surgery on his ruptured right Achilles has been "successful".

The 18-year-old hobbled off the field in the first half of the Blues' 2-2 draw at home to Burnley on Monday night, and he subsequently confirmed the extent of the injury meant his season was over.

It is understood that Tuesday's procedure was an exploratory one, with the possibility of further surgery to come.

He tweeted: "Operation was successful. Thank God always and thank you all for your messages and support, the return begins now."

In an accompanying video, in which the forward is laying on a hospital bed with his lower-right leg in a cast, Hudson-Odoi said: "I'm doing better and feeling better. It's just the road to recovery now."

On Wednesday evening, the club released a statement stating that Hudson-Odoi would spend the summer undergoing rehabilitation to "resume full training as soon as possible".

Hudson-Odoi has had an excellent breakthrough season at Chelsea in which he earned his first full England cap, despite being used intermittently by Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri.

A January target for Bayern Munich, Hudson-Odoi was keen to leave Chelsea in search of regular first-team football but, with the west London club facing a transfer ban this summer, he has not been for sale.

Hudson-Odoi has made 24 appearances for the Blues this season but only four have them have been Premier League starts. He has scored five goals in all competitions, four of which have come in the Europa League.
