Ferguson will not pressure midfielder into penning new deal

Sir Alex Ferguson will not be putting pressure on Paul Scholes to prolong his playing career and will delay contract talks until the end of the season. The veteran midfielder took the decision to hang up his boots at the end of the 2010/11 campaign, only to come out of retirement in January 2012. He has been a revelation since returning to the Old Trafford fold and has played a leading role in the Red Devils' ascent to the Premier League summit. It would appear that Scholes, who will turn 38 in November, still has plenty let in the tank, but United will leave any decision regarding his future up to him. "I'm not going to ask him until the end of the season," said Ferguson. "I don't want to put anything in his mind."

Rejuvenated

While reluctant to discuss a possible 12-month contract extension at the current time, Ferguson is full of praise for a player who was nurtured through the academy ranks at Old Trafford to become one of English football's all-time greats. "It's very possible the break he had has helped him," the Scot added on Scholes. "Look at his career, he's had three major injuries - two to his knee and one to his eye - and each time he came back you realised what we had missed. "He is rejuvenated through feeling relief at playing again at the level he is, rather than coaching the young boys. His form is probably better than last season because, when he made the decision to retire, that would have been at the back of his mind. "He would have been thinking that it was his last season. His form was fine, but maybe it did affect him. Now, his form is as good as it has ever been. "Paul is relishing playing again for the fist team. He's taken the opportunity to perform the way he is doing, which is just marvellous."
