Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has worn the same pair of shinpads since he was eight.
The Spaniard admits the revelation has caused much amusement among his team-mates, but he is refusing to part with them until they are no longer serviceable.
Herrera is now 27 so the trusty old pads are almost two decades old.
He told Manchester United's official website: "I have a good story with my shinpads. I have had the same shinpads since I was eight or nine years old.
"Everyone laughs in the dressing room because of them but I am superstitious with that. I like to keep playing with them until they are completely battered."
Asked if he had any other superstitions, Herrera added: "No, not too many. No, just the shinpads."
