Niall Quinn was key in Sunderland's strong start, setting up Gavin McCann to put the hosts in front in just the second minute before scoring to make it 2-0 shortly afterwards.

Roy Keane halved the deficit before the break as he scored his 10th goal of the season.

After a frantic end to the first half, United had to wait until late in the game to grab an equaliser, with Nicky Butt levelling in the 85th minute.
