Is Harry Kane, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo the best goalscorer in 2017?

Ronaldo Kane Messi

Harry Kane is on fire and has had an incredible 2017 - but is he the top scorer from Europe's leading leagues?

The Tottenham ace scored twice in his side's 4-0 thrashing of Huddersfield on Saturday to follow up his midweek Champions League hat-trick against Apoel Nicosia.

That has taken his tally to 36 goals from 31 appearances in club football across all competitions in the calendar year.

Among his Premier League rivals, Kane stands clear in 2017, having scored nine more goals than Romelu Lukaku, 12 more than Sergio Aguero and 18 more than fourth-placed Dele Alli, his Tottenham team-mate.

To put Kane's scoring into perspective, he has scored more goals in all competitions this year than seven current Premier League clubs: Southampton, Watford, Swansea, Burnley, Stoke, West Brom and Crystal Palace.

Kane has been remarkably consistent over the past 12 months - but his total has also been swelled by his huge hat-trick haul.

The 24-year-old's treble in the Champions League last week was his seventh hat-trick of the year. No other current Premier League player has scored more than one hat-trick in that time.

It's not just Premier League players he's trumping in the hat-trick rankings, either. The legendary Lionel Messi has only scored two, the same number as goal hungry Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo.

In fact, Borussia Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (three) is the only player in Europe's top five leagues - apart from Kane - to have scored more than two hat-tricks this year. But his total isn't even half as many as Kane has scored!

When it comes to total hauls Kane is beaten by Messi, who has 45 goals to 36 across all club competitions for Barcelona. But the Argentine has played 12 more games than Kane this year.

Looking at the top scorers in Europe purely on goals per game, Kane leads the way, with an average of 1.16.
