Swedish defender may retire in 2012

Olof Mellberg has hinted that he may hang up his boots once his current contract at Olympiakos expires. The Swede's deal with the Greek giants is set to run until 2012, but he may not sign an extension. The former Aston Villa and Juventus centre-half will be 34 by the time his contract reaches it conclusion, and he feels it may then be time to call it a day. Having been a professional since starting out at Degerfors in 1996, Mellberg accepts that he cannot go on forever. "It feels good at the moment," he told Sportbladet on life in Greece following his summer switch from Juve.

Future

"My family and I have been well received by the club and have received a lot of help with everything. On his future, he added: "I have got a three-year contract with Olympiakos and then I will be 34 or 35. It's hard to imagine I will play much longer after that." Mellberg has also revealed that he is contemplating retiring from international football before the 2012 European Championships head to Poland and Ukraine. "It's hard to talk about what will happen two years in the future," he said. "But I have no idea whether I will play at the next European Championship."
