NEWCASTLE

What are Newcastle's January transfer plans?

Newcastle are poised to try and do business but players will need to leave the club first.

There are a number whose futures are uncertain and have been for some time, including Kieran Trippier, Calum Wilson and Sean Longstaff, as well as others more on the periphery such as Martin Dubravka and Isaac Hayden.

Then there are those who see their contracts expire on June 30 so can speak to foreign clubs from January 1, including Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth, John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie.

If the club can make new additions, they would most like to do so at right-wing and have joined Liverpool in monitoring closely the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo.

They also tried hard to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace as a new centre-back in the summer, with a string of bids turned down up until a final one of up to £65m.

Central midfielder, goalkeeper and right-back positions are also being looked at, while left back Jamal Lewis officially returns to the club following a loan spell in Brazil with Sao Paulo.

Martin Dubravka

Newcastle's understudy goalkeeper has performed well in the absence of the injured Nick Pope this season, but reports have linked him with a move to the Saudi Arabian Pro League ahead of his contract expiring.

Callum Wilson

The Newcastle striker is out with a hamstring problem that is likely to sideline him for the first part of 2025, leaving his future uncertain, having managed just four appearances so far in an injury-plagued season.

Fabian Schar

Newcastle need to agree new terms with the 33-year-old defender if he is stay beyond the summer, but he said in November that he would "love to stay". Eddie Howe continues to rely on him at centre-back.

Sean Longstaff

The Athletic report that an option in the midfielder's deal has been triggered by Newcastle, which would extend his deal until the summer of 2026. As yet there has been no official announcement.

Newcastle had to make sales last summer to stay in line with the league's financial rules so it is unlikely they would allow an academy graduate to leave for free, given they represent pure profit on the books when a sale occurs.

Jamaal Lascelles

Newcastle exercised an option in their captain's contract last season, but it remains unclear what the future holds for the defender beyond this summer. The 31-year-old is yet to play this season, having deputised regularly for Sven Botman when he was injured in the previous campaign.

Emil Krafth

Injury has kept the defender's minutes to a minimum in the first half of the season after he signed a one-year deal last summer. The 30-year-old has been consistent when called in as defensive back-up.

John Ruddy

Newcastle signed their third-choice goalkeeper to a one-year deal last summer and it is unclear at this stage if it will be extended further. The 38-year-old is yet to feature for the club.

Mark Gillespie

The 32-year-old academy graduate, who returned to the club from Motherwell in 2020, had an option in his deal activated at the end of last season to keep him until this summer after Loris Karius left the club.

Who did Newcastle sign in the summer transfer window?

Lewis Hall - Chelsea, £28m

Miodrag Pivas - FK Jedinstvo Ub, undisclosed

Odysseas Vlachodimos - Nottingham Forest, undisclosed

Lloyd Kelly - Bournemouth, free

John Ruddy - Birmingham, free

William Osula - Sheffield United, £15m
