Former Sutton United goalkeeper Wayne Shaw has told Sky Sports News his decision to eat a pie during an FA Cup tie with Arsenal was "naive" but that he is only guilty of "bringing a smile to people's faces".
Last week Shaw was banned from football for two months and fined £375 for breaching FA betting rules. It was alleged he 'intentionally influenced a football betting market'.
"It's difficult to admit (wrongdoing). It was one of those occasions and I got swept away with it all," Shaw said. "I do have regrets and it was a bit of naivety."
A bookmaker had offered odds of 8/1 on him eating a pie during a live television broadcast of February's game against Arsenal.
Shaw claims 72 people won a total of just over £2667, including three people linked to his Facebook page, but denies telling anyone of his intentions beforehand.
The substitute goalkeeper admitted he was aware of the betting promotion prior to the game but claims it was not a factor in his decision, highlighting the fact he didn't benefit financially.
"I didn't realise it would cost me my job, my livelihood and bring embarrassment."
Shaw, who says his decision to eat the pie in the 83rd minute of the game was a "bit of fun" and a response to Arsenal fans singing about his weight, described his action as an "off the cuff moment" and made sure he waited until all the substitutes had been used during the second half.
"I spent a couple of minutes with the gaffer for the team talk and just went out of the room, through the bar area with all the supporters.
"I went to the canteen where all the food is and just thought I would have something to eat - I hadn't eaten all day in the run up."
Shaw, who supporters affectionately labelled the 'roly poly goalie' revealed he was happy to engage in the humour and even enjoyed an exchange with Alexis Sanchez in the warm up.
"Sanchez had some light-hearted fun with me. He just said 'you are a big lad' and I think I said 'if I see you I will buy you half a pint.' You are just in awe of some of those players."
Shaw also revealed that the fallout of his decision has been extremely stressful and that he's taking tablets for depression.
"They (independent panel) had to do their job, and they've made an example of me. I'm glad it's out of the way. It's been a long seven months."
During his ban Shaw cannot take part in any football activity but he hopes to return to his commercial manager role at AFC Totton.
