Nigel Reo-Coker says the opportunity to play games was the driving force behind his move to IK Start.
Reo-Coker, who remains a target for La Liga side Granada, has joined the Norwegian side in a move he feels is beneficial to all parties.
The former Aston Villa and West Ham midfielder told Sky Sports: "It's been well documented that I've been training with Granada.
"(Manager) Tony Adams was fantastic and he's indicated to my agent that he'd like to sign me for next season.
"But in the meantime, I want to play games so I've made the decision to sign for IK Start.
"I could have bided my time and waited for things to develop, but I see this move as perfect for me right now. It works for the club too and I'm really excited to get started."
The 32-year-old has spent the last four years playing in the MLS, but he's now keen to secure a move closer to home.
And he feels he still has a lot to offer: "Sometimes when you move abroad for a new experience it is viewed in a negative way.
"Look at (Sunderland forward) Jermaine Defoe, when he moved to the MLS a lot of people thought his best days were behind him.
"But he's proved that he still has a lot to offer at the top level, and I feel the same way.
"I'm fitter than ever and ready for a new challenge."
