Huddersfield Town striker James Vaughan has extended his loan with Birmingham City until the end of the season with a view to a permanent move.

Vaughan initially moved to St Andrew's in November and the 27-year-old may sign a contract for a further season this summer, with a one-year option.

Town head coach David Wagner told Huddersfield's website: "James made it clear he would like to return to Birmingham and the details of his loan were correct for our club, so I was happy to let this happen.

"The loan period will take James up to the end of his contract at Huddersfield, so I'd like to wish him the best of luck."

Vaughan joined Huddersfield permanently in 2013 after a season on loan from Norwich City and went on to make 95 appearances, scoring 33 goals. He was named the club's player of the season in 2013.

He told social media: "A massive thank you to everyone at Huddersfield for all the great memories over the past few years. Wish you all the best in the future. Absolutely delighted to have re signed for Birmingham and can't wait for tomorrow and the rest of the season."

Vaughan has made six appearances for Gary Rowett's side and the agreement means Vaughan will be available for Birmingham's FA Cup tie against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Rowett said: "Vaughan showed as a Birmingham fan how motivated he was to be at the club, he has showed that in his performances.

"He didn't get the goal he was so desperate for but played a big part in our upturn in form after a tough month, which is not easy to do.

"Clayton (Donaldson) is so unique to our style it's very difficult to find someone else who can have that same effect when he is on the pitch. Certainly he did that for the three or four games he started.

"He hadn't started that many games this season up until that so I think we have seen James Vaughan at perhaps his least fit, his least match-ready - and even at that point he has had an effect on games whether he has started or come on as sub."
