Former Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse is among four people arrested as part of an investigation into a blackmail case.
The four are being held in custody after arrests in Paris and Marseille as part of an inquiry into a suspected attempt to bribe France international Mathieu Valbuena, a police official said on Tuesday.
Cisse was apprehended as he knew the others involved, but is not suspected of a role as instigator.
The attempted extortion involved video footage of sex recorded on a mobile phone, said the official, who declined to be identified.
Valbuena, 31, plays for Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais and the French national team.
Cisse, whose career was marred by injuries, is currently without a club.
The 34-year-old, who scored nine goals in 41 games for France, made just 49 appearances for Liverpool during a three-year stay at Anfield between 2004-2007.
