Nigel Clough has revealed that he is exploring the possibility of adding James Wallace to his ranks at Sheffield United.
The midfielder is out of contract at Tranmere Rovers after two years at Prenton Park.
A compensation fee would be required were he to move on this summer as he is only 22 years of age.
Clough is hopeful that an agreement can be reached that suits all parties, with his rebuilding project having already seen Chris Basham and Andy Butler complete moves to Bramall Lane.
He told The Star: “It’s still early days. James is out of contract but things like compensation still need to be agreed, so there’s plenty of work to do.
“He’s a good young midfielder and people might already say we’ve got plenty of those, but when the opportunity comes up to bring in a talented player then you take it.
“James probably struggled a bit this year but, when Tranmere had a great start to the season before, he was instrumental in that.”
While Wallace remains very much in his thoughts, Clough has revealed that his interest has ended in St Mirren’s John McGinn after being priced out of a move.
He added: “We did speak with them about John, yes.
“But we were too far apart with regards to a price, so that’s that as far as we’re concerned.”
