Southend captain Chris Barker has agreed a new one-year contract at Roots Hall ahead of the new season.
Barker, who has made over 100 appearances for the Shrimpers, will now stay at the club until the end of the 2012/13 campaign. "I've really enjoyed my time at Roots Hall so I am obviously pleased to be staying," Barker told the club's official website "We were all disappointed not to get over the line and get promoted last season, not just through the play-offs but automatically. "However, I think the experience of that will probably do the younger players some good in the long run and I remain as hungry as ever to get promoted this season." Boss Paul Sturrock added: "I am really pleased to get this one sorted. Chris was immense in his first season with us."
