Bundesliga newcomers receive another defensive injury blow
Bundesliga newcomers St Pauli have suffered another defensive blow after right-back Carsten Rothenbach was injured in training.
The 30-year-old sustained a large flesh wound on his lower leg in a training duel with Moritz Volz which required stitches in a nearby Hamburg hospital.
The wound was 20 centimetres long and two centimetres wide but no information has yet been given on the length of Rothenbach's injury lay-off.
It is the latest injury blow for the club after fellow defender Fabio Morena suffered ruptured knee ligaments in the recent win over Borussia Monchengladbach and is facing 'several weeks' on the sidelines.
St. Pauli team doctor Johannes Holz said that Rothenbach's wound needed to be treated quickly to prevent infection.
Extremely fast
He told BILD: "Such injuries need to be treated extremely fast as there is always a certain danger of infection.
"Fortunately there was just the external tissue affected. The wound was cleaned and had to have stitches."
Rothenbach has been a player at St Pauli since the 2006/07 season and is a first team regular, starting all six Bundesliga outings so far this term for the newcomers.
