Midfielder challenged to make the step up

Walsall teenager Richard Davies has signed a new contract to stay at the League One club next season. Davies' deal was due to expire in the summer and he was offered an extension by manager Chris Hutchings earlier this week. The midfielder, who made his debut in January and has made a total of three substitute appearances to date, is delighted to pledge his future to Walsall. "I am delighted to sign this new deal. I have been here a long time and love the club," Davies told the club's official website. "I am determined to keep pushing on and will come back for pre-season training with a good attitude so that I can make my mark in the friendly matches." Saddlers boss Hutchings has now challenged the 18-year-old to play a more prominent role in his plans next season. Hutchings said: "He's been around the first-team squad this season and now we are looking for him to step up to the next level. The ball is in his court now to show us what he is made of."
