Javier Manquillo is undergoing a medical at Sunderland's Academy of Light ahead of a move, the club has confirmed.
Sky sources say the 22-year-old has been in talks over a season-long loan, with manager David Moyes looking to bring in new faces before Tuesday's transfer deadline.
Speaking after Sunderland's 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Cup, assistant manager Paul Bracewell confirmed Manquillo is now completing medical tests at the club's training ground.
Manquillo spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Liverpool but failed to impress, making just 10 league appearances, and the Merseyside club opted to end the full-back's two-year stay after just one year.
The right-back enjoyed a better campaign on loan at Marseille in Ligue 1 last season, making 31 league appearances, but Manquillo remains surplus to requirements at Atletico.
