Rotherham are in talks with Cardiff to bring striker Alex Revell back to the club, just 12 months after his exit.
Revell left the Millers after a four-year spell last January, moving to Wales in a reported £400,000 deal.
However, he has failed to make an impression with the Bluebirds, scoring just three times in 28 games and Russell Slade's men have said they are looking to off-load him.
Millers boss Neil Redfearn, who was not at the helm when Revell was sold, has expressed an interest and revealed that the two clubs are in "dialogue".
"Alex is somebody we have looked at. We've talked to quite a lot of players and quite a lot of players' agents and clubs. He's in that category," he said.
"There's been dialogue between the clubs. We'll just keep chipping away at the ones we're after.
"We've got to get what's right for us. He has got to fit in with what we want and where we're out but he is somebody we're interested in.
"He's one of several. We're looking at quite a few players in that area. The lads have done great to battle and fight to get us out of the bottom three, but now they need some help."
Revell was an integral part of the Rotherham side which won back-to-back promotions from League 2 to the Championship, famously scoring two goals in the Sky Bet League 1 play-off final against Leyton Orient at Wembley.
Redfearn believes the 32-year-old would not think twice about returning to New York Stadium.
"There is an interest in Alex. He's is obviously someone who did well for this football club.
"He's fondly remembered by the supporters here and I know he feels the same way about the club and the supporters."
