Holders Man Utd were dumped out of the Carabao Cup at the fourth round after a humbling 3-0 defeat to a weakened Newcastle side at Old Trafford to pile the pressure on Erik ten Hag.
In a repeat of last season's final, out-of-form Man Utd were given hope this could be a chance to redeem themselves after Sunday's dismal Manchester derby defeat with Eddie Howe naming a Newcastle team that included five full-backs and no recognised striker.
However, Miguel Almiron - an early replacement for the injured Matt Targett - struck on 28 minutes as Man Utd's confidence wobbled with Hannibal Mejbri lucky not to see red. Before the hosts could recover, Lewis Hall volleyed in his first Newcastle goal to double their lead ahead of the break.
Man Utd came back into the game after the half-time introductions of Sofyan Amrabat and Aaron Wan-Bissaka only to be punished on the hour as Joe Willock delivered a hammer blow. Ten Hag's side were deflated after the third and became petulant as fans left the stadium in their droves.
Newcastle will play Chelsea in the quarter finals after claiming revenge with a rare win at Old Trafford to leave Ten Hag at one of his lowest ebbs since taking charge. Man Utd have lost five of their 10 games at home so far, making it their worst start to a campaign since 1930.
Ten Hag spoke of going for the next trophy after his team beat Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley in February, ending Man Utd's six-year wait for silverware. But results have deteriorated since then, and Wednesday night's performance leaves any chance of more trophies feeling remote.
Hannibal, who was initially booked for an unnecessary barge on Sean Longstaff, should have been sent off inside 20 minutes after a late challenge on Emile Krafth. There was no sign of a senior player putting an arm around him, and the 20-year-old failed to settle down.
"He's hanging in there by a thread," Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said on co-commentary. Casemiro was booked soon after, adding to the sense of anxiety at Old Trafford. Hannibal was then at fault for Newcastle's opener as Tino Livramento launched a stunning counter from his own half.
Almiron, who Howe had planned to rest ahead of a tough run against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund, came on after five minutes with Targett injured and helped to unlock the game for Newcastle. Despite his loose touch, he recovered to open the scoring after being set up by Livramento.
Chants of 'you're getting sacked in the morning', aimed at Ten Hag were quickly followed by another Newcastle goal. Hall struck a sweetly hit volley into the bottom corner after Harry Maguire's clearance reached him at the edge of the box, leaving Andre Onana with no chance.
Amrabat and Wan-Bissaka were brought on for Casemiro and Diogo Dalot at half-time which produced a response from United. The hope was short-lived though as Amrabat was dispossessed in his own half before Willock powered in Newcastle's third on the hour with a wonderful strike.
Not even Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund could recover the situation off the bench with Old Trafford truly deflated after yet another embarrassing performance. Newcastle march into the quarter-finals despite making eight changes as Man Utd's already dismal season reaches new lows.
Man Utd manager Ten Hag apologised to the fans after his side's eighth defeat in 15 games this season.
"We know it's not good enough," he told Sky Sports." We have to take responsibility for it. I have to take responsibility for it. I have to say sorry to the fans as it was below our standards and we have to put it right.
"We have to recover from it and we have to do it quickly. Saturday is the next game [against Fulham] and we have to raise our standards. This is not good enough.
"We have [enough quality], The players will stand up. They are sticking together. You have seen they tried but we know this is not good enough, I am responsible for this and we have to do this together.
"To get your confidence, first you have to play and you get confidence when you get the right result. It's only possible when you're following the rules, the principles, winning your battles and bringing the fight.
"You have to do this as a team. The only way is to stick together, but you have to be disciplined, everyone has to cooperate and be accountable.
"We still sleep on this, then pick the team and the tactics. The most important thing is to put our mentality right."
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was delighted to deliver Newcastle's first Old Trafford victory since December 2013.
"It was a massive performance from the players and I can't credit them enough," said Howe.
"Some great stories, only (an injury to) Matt Targett the negative, but even more credit to the players and some giant performances.
"I personally have always found it a difficult ground and Newcastle the same so another thing to be really proud of is the commitment showed by everyone. I thought we showed some great goals, the quality was a real highlight.
"We are determined to try and do well in every game. We picked a team we felt could win and now we will do the same for Arsenal (on Saturday)."
Man Utd are back in Premier League action on Saturday lunchtime as they head to Fulham; kick-off 12.30pm.
