Community Shield: Manchester City 1-1 Manchester United (7-6 pens) commentary

What's coming up in the Premier League?

The wait is nearly over.

Manchester United will kick off the new Premier League season at home to Fulham on Friday night, live on Sky Sports, with kick-off at 8pm.

The game is one of five matches live on Sky Sports on the opening weekend of the season, including West Ham vs Aston Villa on Saturday Night Football, a Super Sunday double header of Brentford vs Crystal Palace and Chelsea vs Manchester City, before Leicester vs Tottenham round off the weekend's action on Monday Night Football.

Pep: Savinho had a good impact

Man City boss Pep Guardiola:

"[Savinho] had a good impact. I think when playing left he will help Erling [Haaland] to score goals. Look how we scored [today], byline and cross.

"Always with the wingers, I ask that when you have a good feeling, attack the opponent. You have to do it and he did it really well in the 30-35 minutes he played."

Can Bobb replicate Palmer?

Man City boss Pep Guardiola:

"That would be great because Cole Palmer's success at Chelsea last season was unbelievable. He was one of the best players in the Premier League. It will depend. Cole played every single game [last season]. I'm pretty sure if Oscar played a lot of minutes, he could do many good things."

Pep praises McAtee, Bobb

Man City boss Pep Guardiola:

"They have the standards to be here. Especially McAtee. I know him from a long time ago. Today he played really good. Oscar, we saw him last season. The most important thing is they have the confidence of the squad. They adore them and they can rely on them."

Pep: I saw many things I liked

Man City boss Pep Guardiola:

"We could have lost today but of course I saw many things I liked.

"The first 35 minutes were beyond excellent for the time we have been together. Manuel [Akanji] and Ruben [Dias] played only three training sessions.

"We are still far from our best but that's normal. We have won a trophy and that is nice."

Ten Hag: Goals will come for Rashford

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag asked whether he feels Marcus Rashford is low on confidence:

"No. I think he was several times in very good positions. I was very pleased he's getting in those positions. I know that if him, and Rasmus [Hojlund, keep making those movements, and the team make those movements. he will score goals. He is experienced enough to deal with this. Once he scores one, the goals will come."

Ten Hag: No news on De Ligt, Mazraoui

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag asked whether he can provide an update on potential deals for Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui:

"No I can't. When we have some news, we will announce it. Until that point, we work with the squad we have available.

On United's defensive injury problems: "It's clear we have problems. The players have to work to be available and the staff have to work to make players available."

Ten Hag: We have to feel the pain

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag:

"We are disappointed. We have to feel the pain. Everyone feels the pain and that is a good signal. But also, I see the positives."

An unlucky omen?

Man City 1-1 Man Utd (7-6 pens)

Man City's players make their way up the famous 107 Wembley steps.

They were denied a league and cup double by Erik ten Hag's side back in May - but bragging rights belong to the blue half of Manchester today.

Players collect their medals, as does Pep, shaking hands with dignitaries as they go.

De Bruyne lifts the silverware, flanked by Dias and Ederson either side. Cue Blue Moon over the PA system.

Man City 1-1 Man Utd (7-6 pens)

Roy Keane speaking on ITV Sports:

"If you were Erik ten Hag, you'd be upbeat for the start of the season, on the evidence of that. Just not strong enough in the end, and they'll need a bit more steel to avoid conceding late goals like the one they did today."

Man Utd come second best - again

Man City 1-1 Man Utd (7-6 pens)

Food for thought for both managers. The big winners, you'd suspect, will be the array of young talent (on both sides) that will hope to have played their way into next week's starting XIs, as the Premier League kickstarts in earnest.

Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho impressed in red, while Oscar Bobb and Rico Lewis delivered for City.

Man City win Community Shield

City are the Community Shield 2024 winners!

Akanji with an emphatic winning penalty, in off the underside of the crossbar.

That's City first Community Shield title since 2019. Not quite vengeance for May's FA Cup final defeat to their Manchester neighbours, but a nice-to-have, all the same.

Man Utd 6-7 Man City

SCORED! Akanji slams home and City win the shootout!

Man Utd 6-6 Man City

OVER!!! Evans spoons his penalty over the bar! City can win it with their next kick!

Man Utd 6-6 Man City

SCORED! Dias levels it up again! Low to the left of Onana, who dives right.

Man Utd 6-5 Man City

SCORED! Martinez with a slow run-up... and it's in.

Man Utd 5-5 Man City

SCORED! What a penalty from Nunes. He finds the top corner and sudden death continues!
