Ipswich frustrated on home turf

Ipswich saw two more home points slip through their grasp as determined Plymouth claimed a draw at Portman Road. Jon Stead came close to opening the scoring before the interval only to be denied by a post, while Simon Walton and Paul Gallagher missed chances for the visitors. The home side picked up the pace after the interval but were unable to find a way past the determined Romain Larrieu in the Pilgrims' goal. Stead had been Ipswich's hero in midweek as he scored twice to secure a 2-1 victory over Barnsley, but he was the main culprit for the Tractor Boys on this occasion as he squandered a host of presentable chances. The hosts piled on the pressure late on in a bid to claim three points, but Argyle held on to end a run of four successive defeats in all competitions. Magilton made two changes to the Ipswich side that defeated Barnsley in midweek, with Owen Garvan and Pablo Counago replacing Alan Quinn and Kevin Lisbie. Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock named new loan signing Alan Judge among his substitutes, while Gallagher was recalled to the starting XI in one of four changes from Tuesday night's 2-0 defeat at Bristol City.

Speculative

Jamie Mackie saw his speculative long-range effort fly wide inside the opening minute of the game, before Gallagher wasted a good chance for Plymouth by firing straight at home goalkeeper Richard Wright from 12 yards. Simon Walton and Rory Fallon both shot over the bar from distance as the visitors continued to press. Ipswich eventually responded with a chance of their own after 27 minutes as Tommy Miller tested Argyle keeper Larrieu from inside the area. The hosts then came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock when Stead struck the post from 12 yards. Garvan and Pim Balkestein shot wide for the Tractor Boys in the closing stages of the half, while at the other end Walton's ambitious 35-yard strike was comfortably collected by Wright. The lively Walton had another opportunity immediately after the interval, but he was unable to keep his shot down from 20 yards.
Misery
Ipswich responded well and Stead forced Larrieu into further action, before Walters blazed over the bar when well positioned inside the area. Chris Clark had a similar chance for Plymouth soon after, but he also lifted his shot skywards. Stead saw yet another effort saved by Larrieu with 20 minutes remaining and the former Sheffield United striker's afternoon of misery was completed two minutes later when he was replaced by Danny Haynes. Ipswich threw men forward in the closing stages and Larrieu had to be alert to keep out a 25-yard strike from Lisbie, another substitute. Garvan and Alex Bruce both failed to hit the target as the pressure grew on the Argyle goal and Haynes also screwed a left-footed shot wide with two minutes remaining. Lisbie had a final chance to claim the points for Ipswich at the death, but Larrieu once again denied the hosts.
