Hibernian paid the price for squandering a series of chances as Christian Nade scored in stoppage-time to earn Raith Rovers a 1-1 draw at Easter Road.
Hibs were looking to climb above Rangers and go second in the Scottish Championship but, despite their total dominance, they could only muster a Martin Boyle second-half goal and ended up having to share the spoils.
The hosts were quickly on the front foot against sixth-placed Raith and Boyle saw an early shot deflected out for a corner, from which Liam Fontaine headed wide.
David McGurn had a great afternoon in goal for the visitors and he kept out a long-range effort from Jason Cummings, before blocking Boyle’s low shot, after Scott Allan had fired over.
Cummings was causing Raith all sorts of problems and he hit the post with a low effort after a neat turn in the area before trying to stroke a shot into the bottom corner, only for McGurn to save.
And the hosts finally got the breakthrough a minute after the half-time interval when Allan played in Boyle, who opened his account for Hibs by shooting under McGurn.
Raith almost levelled a couple of minutes later but Mark Oxley in the Hibernian goal did brilliantly to keep out a Mark Stewart shot.
And Hibernian then had a fantastic chance to double their lead but, after a Cummings shot was saved, Boyle hit the bar when he looked certain to score.
Boyle then did manage to head the ball into the net after McGurn had saved from Liam Craig but the flag was up for offside.
McGurn saved from Boyle once again as the minutes counted down but it looked like his efforts would be in vain, only for Nade to punish Hibs for their wastefulness by heading in a late Ryan Conroy corner.
