Bayer go through on away goals
Bayer Leverkusen survived a scare as they overcame Hamburg on away goals after a 3-2 defeat on Wednesday night.
Winning 1-0 from the first-leg, Bayer got off to a flying start with former Hamburg star Sergej Barbarez returning to haunt his old club by redirecting Tranquillo Barnetta's free-kick past Hamburg keeper Frank Rost.
Hamburg fought back and drew level on 53 minutes with half-time substitute Piotr Trochowski scoring with a fine shot from the edge of the box.
Bayer restored their lead just two minutes later with match-winner from the first-leg Theofanis Gekas racing through and firing his shot in off the post.
Hamburg refused to give up and Paolo Guerrero drew them level on the night when he collected Guy Demel's cross and fired high into the net.
The home side set up a frantic finale when Dutch ace Rafael van der Vaart converted Guerrero's pass to level up the aggregate scores, but Bayer held on to go through on the away goals rule.
