Tom Nichols marked his home debut in style as Crawley Town beat Scunthorpe United 1-0 in a scrappy encounter at The People's Pension Stadium to claim their first win of the season.
Nichols, recruited from Bristol Rovers in the summer, scored his first league goal since last December in the 15th minute when Nathan Ferguson's excellent pass created space for Tyler Frost and his low cross from the left was swept home at the far post by Nichols.
Both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances, although Scunthorpe will feel their second-half pressure deserved reward. Myles Hippolyte went closest with a right-foot shot from 25 yards which hit the post and Crawley keeper Glenn Morris did well to save Frank Vincent's swerving effort when the visitors pressed forward in the closing stages.
Frost looked lively for the hosts but their best chance of a second goal fell to defender George Francomb, who lashed a right-foot shot from 20 yards midway through the second half that keeper Rory Watson palmed away at full stretch.
