Paddy McCourt grabbed the all-important winner as Notts County claimed a crucial 1-0 win at fellow strugglers Colchester.
McCourt headed in with 22 minutes remaining to move the Magpies six points clear of the relegation zone, while the U's remain lodged in the bottom four. The visitors were the better side in the first half and Gary Jones went close early on, while Colchester goalkeeper Sam Walker foiled Jamal Campbell-Ryce. Walker denied Blair Adams and Liam Noble in the minutes that followed, although the hosts came close to scoring on the stroke of half-time when George Moncur's deflected strike from the edge of the area flew straight at keeper Roy Carroll. Carroll made a good save with his legs to deny Gavin Massey early in the second half while Garry Thompson missed a glorious chance for County when he headed Jones' delivery wide. McCourt then directed a fine header past Walker from Campbell-Ryce's cross to break the deadlock midway through the second half. McCourt was denied a second by Walker soon after and although left-back Blair Adams had to clear Macauley Bonne's effort off the line late on, the Magpies held on for a big victory.
