Ollie Watkins' goal secured Exeter a 1-0 Sky Bet League Two win at Cambridge.
Watkins struck the winner 14 minutes from time after being released by Ryan Harley, seeing his effort beat Will Norris after a deflection off Ryan Haynes.
Watkins had earlier robbed a defender and fired just wide, while Haynes was called upon to make a vital defensive interception to take the ball off the head of Jayden Stockley as the forward looked poised to nod home Lee Holmes' deep cross.
Cambridge's only real chance came when James Dunne was fed by Ben Williamson and saw his effort from the edge of the box palmed wide by Bobby Olejnik.
After half-time Norris was called into a double save, beating away David Wheeler's curling effort and tipping over Watkins' rebound.
Cambridge right-back Darnell Furlong produced a superb block on the line to keep put Bruno Ribeiro's powerful header from Holmes' corner to keep the home side on level terms and Stockley headed over a Holmes corner before Watkins hit the winner.
