Ash Taylor scored only goal as Tranmere moved into the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Area quarter-finals with a 1-0 win at Accrington.
The defender fired home from 10 yards in the 39th minute after Jose Baxter's initial effort had been blocked by Luke Joyce to make it an unhappy 49th birthday for Accrington boss John Coleman. It was perhaps justice for Taylor who scored in the tie which was abandoned after 38 minutes last week following Tom Bender's head injury, when Les Parry's men were leading 2-1. Earlier, Tranmere's Zoumana Bakayogo and Mustafa Tiryaki both had shots blocked while Kurtis Guthrie wasted a free header for Stanley. Guthrie ran the length of the pitch just after the break but could not finish, while Ian Goodison's header for Tranmere was caught by Ian Dunbavin. Joss Labadie and Adam McGurk also wasted chances to make it a more comfortable night for Tranmere. They almost paid for their profligacy with 10 minutes remaining, when an Ian Craney free kick was punched by keeper Owain Fon Williams and the ball found Guthrie who sent a header crashing off the bar. Rovers sub McGurk then missed an open goal with Dunbavin stranded but the League One side held on to seal a trip to Chesterfield.
