Emanuele Giaccherini's late goal stunned AC Milan as Bologna snatched a 1-0 victory at San Siro.
The on-loan Sunderland winger has struggled with injuries this season but managed to make a huge impact for resurgent Bologna at just the right time.
Giaccherini's 82nd-minute strike will also send a shockwave through the Milan camp, with a new-year push for the Champions League places already looking unrealistic for a club now fallen to seventh place.
Sinisa Mihajlovic's Rossoneri had the best chances of the first half, with visiting goalkeeper Antonio Mirante denying Keisuke Honda, M'Baye Niang, Giacomo Bonaventura and Ignazio Abate.
Bologna looked brighter after the break and Giaccherini fired a warning shot when blasting just past Gianluigi Donnarumma's near post following a mistake in midfield by Riccardo Montolivo.
The former Juventus player then shot over the bar and, after Alessio Cerci had become the latest Milan man to fall foul of Mirante, he fired Bologna into the lead with eight minutes remaining.
Anthony Mounier provided the cross and Giaccherini was all alone at the far post for an easy tap-in.
With Milan reeling Bologna almost grabbed a stoppage-time second, with former Diavolo striker Mattia Destro bursting into the box, only for Donnarumma to race off his line and gather the ball.
Roberto Donadoni's Bologna are now seven points clear of the relegation zone after winning for the fifth time in eight matches. Milan's nine-game unbeaten run is over ahead of Saturday's trip to Roma.
