Damon Hill, John Watson and Pat Symonds in the studio; Programme broadcast immediately after this Sunday's Italian GP on Sky F1
Thursday 4 September 2014 10:13, UK
Episode two of Tales from the Vault follows our Italian GP coverage this Sunday at 4.15pm.
The theme of this week's show is underdogs, focusing on the teams and drivers who have punched above their weight in F1.
Steve Rider is joined by guests Damon Hill, John Watson and Pat Symonds - each of whom have an Underdog story to tell.
Pat Symonds hasn’t always enjoyed a working for top F1 teams. He started out as an engineer at Toleman looking after Ayrton Senna as he burst onto the F1 scene in the 1984 season. Symonds witnessed great things from the Brazilian as he took the Toleman team to new heights, especially at the 1984 Monaco GP where he took on the might of Alain Prost in the McLaren.
Who could forget Hungary 1997 where Damon Hill in the inferior Arrows car battled past Michael Schumacher to take the lead? His bid for victory ultimately failed due to a mechanical failure, handing victory to former Williams teammate Jacques Villeneuve.
One underdog who truly beat the odds was John Watson who battled from 22nd on the grid to first in his McLaren to win in Long Beach in 1983. It remains a record today.
