Pirelli's new wet-weather tyres for the 2012 season will be called the Cinturato and will be faster, grippier and 'squarer'.
New tyres 'competitive compounds with consistent degradation'
Pirelli's new wet-weather tyres will be called the Cinturato and their new range of tyres for the 2012 season will be softer, grippier and 'squarer', the tyre manufacturers have revealed.
At the launch of their new compounds for the upcoming season, the tyre makers have revealed their intention was to make 'competitive compounds with consistent degradation' and released 'a range of tyres entirely renewed for the latest generation of cars, with the aim of encouraging a wider range of new strategies from the teams and maintaining at least two pit stops.
'The key characteristics of the new tyres - developed by Pirelli together with the teams in response to the latest aerodynamic regulations regarding blown exhausts - are: squarer profiles, increased grip, and softer, more competitive compounds with consistent degradation.'
The coloured markings will be 'bigger and more easily recognisable', with the colours markedly different both from each other and last year's coding.
While the Super Softs will remain red and Softs yellow, the new
Cinturato compounds will be marked blue for Full Wet and green for Intermediate.
The only surprise is that the Hards and Mediums are to keep their near-indistinguishable silver/white linings.
Meanwhile, Pirelli have explained the new name thus: 'The Cinturato name that has become emblematic in Formula One history returns: the tyre with which Pirelli raced and won in the 1950s. From 2012, Cinturato will denote the full wet and intermediate tyres.'
The dry weather compounds will keep their 'P Zero' branding.
