Adrian Lewis survived a thrilling encounter against youngster Keegan Brown to reach the last 16 of the World Championship at Alexandra Palace.
The two-time former world champion was pushed all the way by the 22-year-old current PDC World Youth champion before prevailing 4-2.
Meanwhile, Phil Taylor remains on course for a 17th world title after dismantling Mark Webster for the loss of four legs while Dean Winstanley beat Darren Webster in a dramatic 4-3 victory.
After knocking out John Part last week Brown looked set to give Lewis a formidable challenge and moved two-sets-to-one ahead before the Potters' thrower responded with a magnificent 134 checkout to level the match.
Lewis won the next before sealing victory with a sensational 122 outshot to set up a clash against Raymond van Barneveld or Jamie Caven.
"He never gave in," Lewis told Sky Sports Darts. "That's the key to a great champion. he's got a lot of bottle and he was fantastic.
"I had to dig in deep and keep going at him."
World No 2 Taylor coasted past 2008 Lakeside champion Mark Webster with an impressive 101.92 average and a checkout percentage of 46.2 to set up a clash against Kim Huybrechts.
Welshman Webster knocked Taylor out in the last eight in 2011, but the left-hander was unable to come close to Taylor.
The 16-time champion was pleased with the whitewash and is now eyeing up more success in north London.
"I felt nice and steady and although he won just four legs it got him close to winning a set and if he had done that it can change a match, it would have boosted his confidence levels," Taylor said.
"I am enjoying it. I am wide awake I have done everything right. Preparation is everything, you don't prepare you dont win."
Taylor will face Kim Huybrechts in the next round after the Belgian beat Ian White 4-3.
"Huybrechts it will be a cracker, I have to stop him," Taylor added. "We are going to have a proper game of darts."
Swinton-born Winstanley booked his place in the next round with a drama-filled victory against Darren Webster.
Winstanley was looking impressive with a 91 checkout putting him 2-0 up.
Webster however fought back and remarkably went 3-2 up before Winstanley levelled and then took the match 4-2 in the deciding set.
Winstanley, the 2011 BDO runner-up, set up a clash against Max Hopp or Vincent van der Voort and he admitted at being thrilled to come through a ding-dong tussle.
"Darren (Webster) did what he always does, he never gives in. I'm stuck for words ... what a game! I'm through and I'm happy."
