Siobhan-Marie O'Connor: narrowly missed out on gold medal in 100m butterfly

Siobhan-Marie O'Connor picked her third silver medal of Glasgow 2014 with a personal-best swim in the 100m butterfly final at Tollcross Swimming Centre.

Having taken silver in both the 200m freestyle and 4x100m freestyle relay on Thursday, O'Connor returned to the pool on Friday evening looking to go one better.

The Bath swimmer, 18, had qualified fastest for the final but knew she faced tough competition in the form of the reigning champion Alicia Coutts of Australia.

O'Connor made a typically fast start and reached halfway in front from Coutts and Canada's Katerine Savard. The England youngster still led with 20m to go but wasn't quite able to hold on as Savard touched home in 57.40 seconds, a Games record.

It meant another silver medal for O'Connor and, having recorded a personal best (57.45s), little more could have been asked of her. Coutts (58.21s) eventually finished fourth with another Australia, Emma McKeon, finishing strongly to take the bronze in 57.66s.

O'Connor is in action again on Saturday for the 4x200m freestyle relay before her favoured event, the 200m individual medley, on Sunday.
