B-Hop finally avenges 1993 loss with messy victory in Las Vegas

Bernard Hopkins avenged his defeat to Roy Jones Jnr 17 years ago with a unanimous points victory at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The two future Hall of Famers finally faced each other again after they went their separate ways following Jones' victory in 1993 for the vacant IBF middleweight title. Both went on to dominate for more than a decade - Hopkins at 160lb and Jones at super-middleweight and light-heavy - but the rematch came far too late in both fighters' careers for it to mean anything to anybody but themselves. Hopkins, now 45 and lacking the stamina to fight in more than flurries, used rough-house tactics to gain the upper hand, cutting Jones twice over the left eye with 'accidental' head clashes while rabbit punches and low blows also punctuated the brawl. But it was Hopkins who took a knee three times throughout the fight, the first going down for a lengthy period after taking a blow behind the ear in the sixth. The round ended bizarrely, both fighters continuing after the bell and needing to be separated not only by referee Tony Weeks but also security guards. Jones, a badly faded force of old losing his third fight in five, frustrated Hopkins with an effective defence but rarely did enough going forward to win any of the rounds. The 41-year-old, who afterwards admitted retirement is now a possibility, lost 118-109 and 117-110 twice on the judges scorecards. "I'll go back and talk to my coaches and my Dad and if we think I still have it, we'll keep going, and if not, we'll call it a day," he said.
