Mexican secures ninth-round stoppage

Humberto Soto staged the second successful defence of his WBC super-featherweight title in just five weeks by knocking out Benoit Gaudet at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Soto, from Mexico, put his Canadian opponent to the canvas for the third and final time two minutes and 25 seconds into the ninth round in a one-sided contest. Gaudet had been knocked down in the first minute of the opening round and though he quickly recovered his composure, he never gained the upper hand. He did place Soto in trouble in the seventh, albeit courtesy of a low blow, but the Tijuana fighter exacted his revenge by knocking Gaudet down again in the ninth. The Quebecer beat the count but Soto moved in for the kill and, after Gaudet hit the canvas again, the referee quickly brought a swift halt to proceedings. Soto, 28, moves to 48-7-2 (31 KOs) with Gaudet slipping to 20-2 (7 KOs).
