Joshua vs Molina: Katie Taylor outpoints Viviane Obenauf in Manchester
Sunday 11 December 2016 16:12, UK
Irish sensation Katie Taylor earned her second career victory by beating Viviane Obenauf at the Manchester Arena on Saturday night.
The amateur star made the ideal transition to the paid ranks by outclassing Karina Kopinska in her debut two weeks ago and she maintained the momentum with another impressive victory.Super-featherweight Taylor won every prize available in the amateur code and she again demonstrated her blistering speed and hard-hitting capabilities, earning a shutout unanimous decision verdict via a 60-53 scorecard.
The contest started at a frenetic pace as Obenauf marched straight forward, but Taylor quickly showed her class, landing a flurry of body punches and whipping hooks.
The 30-year-old then landed a knockdown in the second as a swift right hand sent her Brazilian counterpart to the canvas, but Obenauf quickly rose to her feet to dispute the referee's decision to call it a knockdown.
In the third, Obenauf had a brief moment of success as a wild punch seemed to wobble the amateur star, but Taylor shrugged off the slight moment of concern to work behind the jab and get back in control.
The tempo was then raised a notch as the Irish favourite started to land some razor sharp combinations and Obenauf suddenly sustained a nasty cut over the left eye in the fifth stanza.
Obenauf survived the punches coming her way and valiantly rode the punches to hear the fight's final bell.
