Scots fighter floored by honours list news

Boxing champion Alex Arthur was floored by a surprise blow on hearing the news of his MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours. The Edinburgh fighter held British, European and Commonwealth super-featherweight titles during in his career, as well as the interim WBO belt. A committed Christian, Arthur has also spoken in schools and established Alex Arthur Promotions, giving a platform for fighters from the Scottish capital to perform. "I was elated" said 33-year-old, who has won 31 of his 34 professional bouts. "My family more so than me, because it's a really big deal. "It was a surprise. I've spent all my life beating people up. To get an MBE for that is good, but of course it was taken into account the kind of person I am, speaking in churches and schools. "When you look down the list of previous winners, it's just fantastic to be on there with some of them.

Dedicated

"A woman that received one had over 25 years fostered 144 kids - to be thought the same as these people is remarkable. I'm overjoyed." "It's right up there. The only thing you can receive higher is a knighthood." Arthur, who trains in Edinburgh, can often be seen running in Holyrood Park around Arthur's Seat, the extinct volcano which overlooks the capital. He is now nearing a return to title contention after being beaten by Nicky Cook in Manchester in June 2008 when he was fighting for the WBO super featherweight crown. "I've just done things the old fashioned, hard way," he added. "No one's ever helped me, but I like to think I've helped people. "I've trained and dedicated my life to my sport, even in the last few years when I've had no help from the big promoters. "I've had four top-class international back-to-back wins and we're looking to go for a title again soon."
