Ankle injury compounds Belgian's fitness problems

World number two Kim Clijsters is a major doubt for the French Open after injuring her ankle at her cousin Tim's wedding. Clijsters, the reigning Australian and US Open champion and twice a runner up at Roland Garros, was already sidelined by shoulder and wrist problems. On her official website, the latest injury was described as "a severe strain of both the medial and lateral ligaments of the right ankle and torn ligaments, a torn capsule of the ankle joint, a hematoma and torn tendon sheath". The ankle has been immobilised and Clijsters will not be able to use her foot for several days. She is expected to be out for between four and six weeks, throwing into question the 27-year-old's participation at the second grand slam event of the season, which starts on May 17. "Kim has injured her ankle," read a statement on her website. "She won't be able to compete for four to six weeks. "Her participation in the French Open is no longer certain." Clijsters has won three of her four major titles, including the last two in a row, since returning to the WTA Tour at the start of 2009 following the birth of her first child.
