New York Giants have appointed Pat Shurmur as their new coach, prising him away from Minnesota Vikings where he was the offensive co-ordinator.
Shurmur has spent the past two seasons with the Vikings who, on Sunday, missed the chance to reach the Super Bowl after losing 38-7 to Philadelphia in the NFC Conference final.
The Giants will be Shurmur's second chance as an NFL head coach. He took charge of the Cleveland Browns in 2011 and 2012, before being fired when new owners arrived. While with the Browns, his win-loss record was 9-23.
Shurmur was among six candidates for the Giants, who endured a disappointing 3-13 season, and he becomes their third coach in two months. Ben McAdoo was fired in December before defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo took over on an interim basis for the remainder of the regular season.
Giants president John Mara said in a statement: "We are pleased to welcome Pat to our organisation and look forward to the leadership he will provide for our team.
"He has an outstanding track record in developing young players, and it is clear his players respond to his guidance and direction."
Shurmur has been in NFL for 19 seasons, with nine play-off appearances, and in 2005 he reached the Super Bowl as quarterbacks' coach of Philadelphia.
