US skipper insists world number one will have to prove form

Corey Pavin insists Tiger Woods will be treated no differently to any other player trying to force his way on to the US Ryder Cup team. The world number one currently finds himself outside the automatic qualification places for Pavin's team, sitting 11th in the US points list. Only the top eight in the standings are guaranteed to play in the match and - with Woods currently taking time away from the game to overcome a neck injury - automatic qualification is far from certain. It still seems likely he would be a shoo-in for one of Pavin's captain's picks should he fail to break into the top eight. However, the American skipper is adamant Woods will have to prove his form like everybody else ahead of October's clash at Celtic Manor if he is to be selected. "I'm not going to treat Tiger any different than any other player," Pavin said after the final round of the Byron Nelson Championship. "He's certainly not going to be an automatic pick. "He's just going to be treated like everyone else. "I'd love to have him on the team but I want him to be playing well," Woods has played only three tournaments since returning to golf from his self-imposed exile following the explosive revelations about his private life at the end of last year.
