They fell behind on 20 minutes as James Brown scrambled the ball home from close range for Hartlepool.
The home side doubled their advantage three minutes into the second half when Andy Galinagh turned Jamie McCunnie's cross into his own net.
Andy Monkhouse then finished from Antony Sweeney's cross on 62 minutes to make it 3-0 and Michael Macakay piled on the misery with a fourth on 87 minutes.
Lloyd Owusu pulled one back for Cheltenham with a minute to go but his header could not disguise a comprehensive victory for Hartlepool.
The result lifts Danny Wilson's side up to sixth ahead of the rest of the weekend's action, while Cheltenham remain bottom on three points.
