Matchwinner Alex Morgan believes USA's 1-0 victory over England is the ideal preparation ahead of this summer's Women's World Cup in Canada.

Morgan's first half header - her 50th goal in international colours - saw the USA avenge the 2-1 defeat they suffered when they last met England in 2011.

The win means the Americans end their two-match European tour on a high following the 2-0 loss to France earlier this week which saw them slip to third in the world rankings.

"England are such a great team so this was such a good test for us," Morgan told Sky Sports.

“England always bring a physical presence and they also have a finesse to them as well.

Reaction from Stadium MK as England lost their last warm-up match on home soil against the USA ahead of the World Cup in Canada

“It was completely different to France and we're going to see that in the World Cup, we are going to see completely different styles of football.

“We worked on a lot of things in the last game against France and in the five days in between the two games. We worked on how we can expose teams, keep possession more and be more of a threat, and I think we executed that really well.

“This is obviously a stepping stone to the World cup but it was a good test and I think we played pretty well.”

USA’s English-born coach Jill Ellis was pleased with her side’s performance but insists there is more work to be done ahead of the World Cup.

“I feel we controlled the game, we controlled the tempo and I saw some really good things from my team,” she said.

“England were tough to break down and were sitting so deep so it was challenging but I think we deserved the goal we got.

“The result was very important for us in terms of momentum but I think the players understand where we are as a team.

“We scheduled Brazil, France and England very early in our preparations (for the World Cup) so we are still very much building our momentum and fitness. It is important that we remember what our end point and end product is because we are not there yet.”

England midfielder Fara Williams hopes her team-mates can use the performance as a platform to push on, starting at the Cyprus Cup next month.

“It was a very close game,” she said.

“We set out with a game plan and performed it exceptionally well today. It was definitely a massive improvement on what we saw (in the 3-0 defeat) against Germany and I think the gap is closing between the top nations and us.

“We are only in preseason so we can take the positives and build on that heading into the Cyprus Cup in a couple of weeks.”
