Capital giants fail to bolster defensive options

Paris St Germain coach Antoine Kombouare has aired his disappointment at failing to sign a centre-half. The Ligue 1 giants had identified the heart of their back four as an area which needed to be strengthened during the summer transfer window. Lokomotiv Moscow ace Marko Basa was believed to be top of their wish-list, despite being under contract in Russia until 2012. PSG officials did all they could to bring the Montenegro international on board, but Kombouare remains short on defensive options. "I am disappointed we could not sign anyone in that position," he told L'Equipe. "But I didn't want us to do anything in a hurry and sign a player just for the sake of it. "We won't be using our failure to sign anybody as an excuse, as we have the right players to achieve our objectives."

Big club

One player PSG were able to get in this summer was Ivory Coast international Siaka Tiene. The 28-year-old was reported to have been attracting interest from the Premier League as deadline day approached, but he admits the opportunity to move to Paris was too good to turn down. "I had propositions from England but I preferred to join Paris, the first club who contacted me," said Tiene. "When they came back in for me I had no hesitation in signing. For an Ivory Coast international, it is important to play for a big club like PSG."
